There’s a cultural norm that retirement age is about 65.
That made sense back in the day. That was probably when you were getting too old to work effectively … and when you had another ten years to live, give or take.
Now, not so much.
I think its much more useful to plan to live to 100, and to plan on being productive (and earning money) until at least 80.
I think it makes sense to plan to be healthy, productive, and contributing for as long as possible. And to get paid for at least some of that contribution.
It’s also a useful idea because it takes the pressure off. I’m 51. Not even halfway through my career. I can relax a bit … it doesn’t all have to happen right now (or even this decade).
And I don’t have to fund a possible 35 years plus of retirement.
