On looking after yourself

My friend Kate told me recently “I found myself sailing close to the mental health edge over the weekend after pushing hard on writing my book.”

Got me thinking.

If you owned a factory it’d be very easy to optimise for short term profit. Just run double shifts and don’t do any maintenance on your machines.

Clearly that would make you more money … for a while. And equally clearly, it’s a pretty dumb strategy.

And even dumber if you are the factory in this metaphor. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t optimise for short term profit at the expense of things that matter much more than that.
