Many years ago Trish and I spent about a year working with a fabulous architect to design our dream house.
It was a fascinating process. John, our architect, had a great philosophy. He believed there was one perfect house that brought together my wish list, Trish’s wish list, and the terrain. And his job was to find that perfect house.
As I said, it took about a year. We’d meet every week or two, and slowly iterate towards something that in the end we were all thrilled with.
It strikes me how long we spend designing a house compared to designing a life.
PS – We never ended up building that house. The Black Saturday bushfires changed all the planning regulations so we didn’t get a permit. Then we had a financial setback. It just wasn’t meant to be. But then seven years ago Trish found our current (and forever) house … which magically had everything on both our wish lists from all that time ago.
