I've got a very cool BlueAnt wireless Skype headset. It connects via Bluetooth so I can be talking on Skype or listening to iTunes without being attached to my computer. As I said, very cool... until it stopped working. And of course I've had it for over a year so it's outside the warranty - isn't that always the way? I'm quite handy, so I figured I'd pull it apart and see if I could fix it.
I got to use that set of miniature screwdrivers that has been sitting unused in my toolbox for ten years, and I was pretty happy about that.
When I say I'm pretty handy ... unfortunately I'm not quite as handy as I think I am. Next time you see me ask about the complete and unmitigated disaster that was my attempt to do a good deed and fix Trish's boss's boss's toilet when we were house sitting for her.
Anyway, I digress. I did manage to pull it apart. I even managed to identify the part that had come loose, and where it came from. Unfortunately I fell at the final hurdle. Apparently super glue and electronic circuit boards aren't the best of friends. Bugger.
Having completely broken it, I threw it out. The bit I'd broken was the streamer - the part that plugs into the computer. I still had the headphones, so I got on the website to see if I could just buy the streamer. They asked me for the serial number so I pulled out the paperwork that came with it (which miraculously I could find) and discovered the warranty was actually two years.
A warranty no doubt voided by pulling it apart, trying to superglue it back together and throwing it away. To quote the immortal words of Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral, "bugger, bugger, bugger, bugger, bugger".
I sheepishly explained what I'd done in my email. Jack, a prince among men, sent this reply:
Hi Peter, As a good will gesture I will send you a streamer. This should take me a day or two to obtain. Hope you're having a wonderful day!
Not only is he sending me a new streamer for free (which has arrived - thanks Jack), he even hopes I'm having a wonderful day.
And that's why I'm a fan for life!
