On your toolbox for change

If you want to change something, I reckon you have five options sitting in your toolbox.

  1. Decisions. The first option is to make a decision. Start something. Stop something. Decide what’s going to change.

  2. Projects. I’m a big fan of projects … my first book was all about implementing projects that matter. Choose an outcome you’ll achieve by a certain date.

  3. Habits. Unlike a project, a habit doesn’t have an end date. Start small, and set yourself up to succeed. Establish the habit first and then scale it up.

  4. Beliefs. What’s a belief that isn’t serving you? Change it. Choose your beliefs based on what’s useful rather than what’s true.

  5. Identity. All of the above feed into your identity. And you can run it the other way too … choose how you want to show up in the world, and the decisions, projects, habits, and beliefs will line up to that.

Next time you’re reflecting on how to make things better, pull out this toolbox and pick which one is the best fit for the job at hand.
